Ever since my first time in a Canadian Canoe on the River Wye (see previous blogs) I have wanted to own my own so that i could have more frequent mini-adventures however if you have a look online these don’t come cheap unless you fancy and inflatable one.
Here follows the story of when David Adshead and myself built our own Canadian Canoe…
I came across Orca Adventures online a company based near Penrtih in the Lake District who run cane building workshops and after stalking them for over a year decided to take the plunge.
The canoes are built stitching ply together initially with cable ties and then using fibre glass tape and epoxy resin. No electric tools are used its all down to you and basic tools which I think makes the end result even more fantastic.
As an absolute novice it was learning as we went along for me and the expert guidance of Steve and Dan each step of the way was brilliant.
It was a great weekend away spending time with my Dad doing what he loves to do best sawing bits of wood : )
If you have ever fancied owning your own canoe I can thoroughly recommend www.orcadventures.co.uk
All skill levels and ages are catered for the finished article is superb for half the price of buying and Old Town or similar canoe with the added benefit of the skills you will learn to make repairs or modifications to your canoe in the future.
We did several miles of Ullswater before returning home where she was painted, varnished and comfort upgrades applied to the seats. Looking forward to many, many more adventures in her to follow.
